“This Godless Communism” is a series of stories and potted histories that ran in 1961 editions of Treasure Chest of Fun and Fact, a fortnightly comic book published in Ohio by the Catholic Guild. An obvious example of Cold War propaganda, “This Godless Communism” warns young readers about the perils of Soviet communism – and how their lives would be changed if it ever took hold in the United States. The first edition contained a foreword by FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, who described the contents as “most essential, for it helps us to recognise and detect the communists as they attempt to infiltrate the various segments of our society”.
